Art is not a luxury, but a necessity.

Art should be free from restrictions

Art should be free from restrictions – Scarlett Johansson speaks on casting and political correctness.

Scarlett’s interview with artist David Salle in the AS IF magazine is making headlines, reports www.eonline.com. She spoke of the trends she had noticed in casting today, although as an actor, she said she “should be allowed to play any person, or any tree, or any animal because that is my job and the requirements of the job.”

Asked if actors should be allowed to play parts that go beyond representing themselves, their gender or ethnicity, Scarlett said, “There are a lot of social lines being drawn now, and a lot of political correctness is being reflected in art, yet there are times it does get uncomfortable when it affects the art because I feel art should be free of restrictions.”

Scarlett has previously come under fire over roles. She had to step down from playing a transgender man in the film Rub & Tug. She was also criticised after she appeared in the 2017 adaptation of the Japanese manga franchise Ghost in the Shell.
